Ohio Machine Season Begins May 19; Ticket & Parking Information

The Ohio Machine – Ohio’s only Major League Lacrosse team – begins its 2012 home season Saturday, May 19, at Selby Stadium. Thousands of lacrosse fans from several states are expected to attend the inaugural event and subsequent Machine home games. This is an exciting opportunity to showcase Ohio Wesleyan and the City of Delaware.

Several parking lots will be reserved for the Machine’s use during each Saturday home game: May 19, June 9, June 16, June 23, July 14, July 21, and Aug. 11. [Please note that on May 19, Alumni Weekend, OWU employees and guests will be able to park in impacted lots without restriction until 2:30 p.m. Public Safety will issue passes to working OWU employees and contract employees on this date only.]

Prior to each Saturday game day, parking in the following OWU lots will be restricted and opened for event parking (with gate attendants) five hours prior to face-off. Lots marked with an asterisk also will be closed at 5 p.m. on each preceding Friday. Affected lots are:

Phillips Hall lot (handicap parking)
Schimmel/Conrades Science Center lot (season ticketholders)
Haycock Hall / Buildings & Grounds lot (paid event parking)*
Meek Aquatics and Recreation Center lot (paid event parking)
Margaret Sagan Field lot (east side of Henry St., paid event parking)*
Selby Stadium lot (team/vendor use)*

The former Kroger’s parking lot on South Sandusky Street, the former hotel lot on South Henry Street, and the St. Mary’s Church lot on South Henry Street also will be utilized for paid event parking.

Lot attendants at campus venues will use discretion in allowing University employees to enter park temporarily on game days if required for school responsibilities. However, all persons attending a game are expected to pay for parking regardless of OWU affiliation.

Last Day to Reserve Handicapped Seating/Parking for Commencement

Requests to reserve handicap seating for the 2011 commencement ceremony must be made through the Public Safety Office TODAY.

Reserve seating for handicapped persons shall be limited to four (4) per family. Families may request additional seating, but due to the limited area for wheelchairs, we cannot guarantee more than four (4) seats. If fewer requests are submitted, we will make every effort to seat additional family members.

Please note that if weather conditions precipitate moving the ceremony to Gordon Field House, we will have an area for wheelchairs and four additional people. Graduates are limited to five (5) tickets in such an event.

Handicapped parking space will be available in the Schimmel/Conrades Science Center parking lot. Public Safety personnel will maintain list of authorized attendees and will monitor the parking lot.

Please send us the names of your attendees along with the student name ASAP TODAY to ensure they are added to the list for parking.

All receipts must be dated on or before June 30, 2012. You have until September 30, 2012, to submit your receipts for reimbursement.

OWU’s First Green Bishop Awards Announced

The Sustainability Task Force is pleased to announce the recipients of OWU’s first Green Bishop Awards. These awards are given to students, staff members, faculty members, and campus organizations who have made significant contributions to sustainability-related activities and environmentalism at Ohio Wesleyan. The Green Bishop Awards recipients for the 2011-2012 academic year are the following:

> Sarah D’Alexander. Sarah has contributed tireless and passionate labor to OWU’s first “May Move Out,” which promises to redirect student appliances, furniture, and other re-usable items from landfills to local shelters and free-stores.

>Melissa Guziak has contributed to multiple environmental projects on campus. Most notably, Melissa received a grant to turn the Tree House into a showcase of environmental living for the Delaware community. As part of this project, Melissa has been painting the interior of the Tree House with environmentally friendly paint as well as pursuing grey-water and composting systems. She also integrates sustainability into her daily life and often cooks her own locally produced foods. She has also served as president of Environmental and Wildlife Club and as an organizer for Earth Week.

>Ashley Taylor. Ashley has demonstrated environmental sensitivity in all aspects of her daily life. She also has encouraged others to have greater awareness of the many simple ways that they can reduce their environmental footprints.

>Ngoc Tran. Ngoc has worked diligently on various environmental projects on campus and in the Delaware community, including contributing to the WCSAEnvironmental Committee, Potters for Peace, and Earth Day Delaware. She has also brought new energy and ideas to campus recycling.

>Kandi Akers. Kandi Akers regularly surveys the first floor of Phillips Hall to make sure that lights and machinery are turned off when not in use. She conserves and re-uses supplies whenever possible while she saves paper and envelopes for faculty to re-use.

>Michelle Disler. Michelle Disler has explored various ways to reduce paper-use in writing-intensive courses, including encouraging her students to print their papers on double-sided and recycled paper. She also uses recycled paper for her own notes and regularly retrieves and recycles all recyclable items left in her classroom.

>The Tree House. The Tree House embodies the campus sustainability movement and has been at the forefront of campus environmentalism. The many initiatives and house projects pursued by Tree House members have had a lasting impact on the students, staff, and faculty of OWU.

We congratulate all of the award recipients. We also wish to thank all of the nominators who took the time to write on behalf of their peers.

We would like to send a heartfelt thank you to the faculty, staff, and students of Ohio Wesleyan University. Since the loss of our son, Jake, the amount of love and support we have received from the entire OWU community has been tremendous. It has warmed our hearts to hear how much Jake was cared for there on the OWU campus. He always looked forward to spending time with his OWU family. Many of you have shared our grief and expressed to us the importance Jake had in your life by attending the different memorials, sending us letters, notes or emails, and in individual conversations. It has been comforting to hear from all of you.

I would like to express my deepest thanks to the Ohio Wesleyan community – students, faculty, trustees, coaches, administrators, alumni, and staff – everyone who contributed to our efforts to successfully enroll the Class of 2016.

It truly is a community effort, and we are grateful for your partnership, patience, willingness to attend events and meet with prospective students and families, and so much more to make every interaction with our campus special and memorable.

From the Buildings and Grounds and Housekeeping staffs, who made the campus look fantastic; to the Residence Hall staff and Chartwells, who housed and fed our prospective students; to our faculty and Trustees who made countless calls and sent emails to keep our prospective students engaged and informed; to alumni who hosted regional receptions and reached out to inquiring students; and to everyone who made a difference through your kind attention to these families – we could not have done it without you. Thank you for all you did to make this moment possible.
