It was by a quirk of fate that I landed up with a course on economic development my junior year at Ohio Wesleyan. It was the year 2005. Quite to my surprise, when we reached the section on ‘microfinance’, aside from being overwhelmed by such a weighty term, I realized that its idea of group lending really did appeal to me! Simply put, under this system, if a single borrower in a group of five defaulted on her payment, in the next loan cycle nobody would get a loan. Through the process of group formations and peer pressure, there was suddenly no need for collateral as members borrowed against each other. It was an inclusive, collaborative approach towards ensuring to the poor access to financial capital.

Life for Gay, Steve, and Lilly Grossman is, and has been for years, filled with endless doctors, hospital visits, and medical tests for now 15-year-old Lilly. Up until very recently, she hadn’t slept through the night because of violent tremors she suffered with since the age of four. Lilly, who uses a walker or wheelchair, spent a week to 10 days in the hospital, each year, fighting the common flu all our children face each year.

Jeff Norris began to get bombarded with college recruitment materials during his junior year in high school. His longtime interest in zoology moved the Jacksonville, Illinois native close to several liberal arts colleges including Ohio Wesleyan. Then, says Norris, OWU shot to the top of the list. Both of his parents also liked OWU (“an important criterion of my mom’s was that my college of choice be no more than eight driving hours away,” says Norris) and upon dropping their son off on the “big day,” happened to be at a campus gathering, where they met zoology professor/ornithology expert, Jed Burtt. The younger Norris was then invited to attend the zoology department’s weekly 4 p.m. science seminar including other students and professors, and in those few serendipitous moments, Norris knew he was at the right university.

“You have to be part of a strong team to succeed,” believes Doug Pierson ’92. He should know. As Senior Solution Manager currently leading a 1,000-person worldwide philanthropy program at Microsoft, Pierson is combining personal interest in giving back to others through his work at the Seattle-based company as his team targets $1.5 million in donations this year, spanning 34 countries and an equal number of charities. And then there is Pierson the risk-taker (calculated, he insists) whose personal interests have taken him to far-flung corners of the world and to three of the “seven summits”—the highest summit on every continent. Mountaineering to Pierson is a spiritual experience. “You challenge yourself physically and mentally,” he says. “You’re constantly checking yourself and the environment, and you are always concerned about yourself and your teammates.” But teamwork to Lieutenant Colonel Pierson also is about being a United States Marine, leading a battalion, deploying overseas on multiple occasions—including to Iraq twice after 9-11; about successfully leading his company of Marines into and out of Iraq without any fatalities; about joining an all-volunteer mountain search and rescue team as a field team member, and about helping to save those who become trapped or lost in the mountains.
